The Una River: The One, the Only, and the Inimitable Queen
When Roman legionaries first saw the emerald cascades in the northwestern part of present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina, they were speechless before their beauty and exclaimed: “Una!” (The One!). That name has accompanied it to this day, perfectly describing a river that is not just a waterway, but a lifeline, a natural border, and a national pride.
From a mountain rapid to a peaceful plain beauty
The Una is a river of incredible transformations throughout its 212 kilometers of course.
Source: It begins its life at the foot of Mount Stražbenica, in the Lika village of Donja Suvaja. In its upper reaches, it is a powerful, cold mountain river that carves deep canyons and creates spectacular waterfalls.
Traveling through cities: On its way to the mouth, Una hugs the cities that developed thanks to its power: Martin Brod, Kulen Vakuf, Ripač, Bihać, Bosanska Krupa, Bosanska Otok, Novi Grad, Kostajnica and Bosanska Dubica.
Ušće: It finds its peaceful end at Jasenovac, where, now as a wide plain river, it flows into the Sava National Park Una.
Ecological gem: Home of the endemic bluebell
The Una is one of the cleanest river systems in Europe, which is confirmed by its incredible biodiversity:
Flora: Over 170 species of medicinal plants grow in its basin. However, its greatest botanical treasure is the Una bellflower (Campanula unensis), an endemic plant that grows exclusively in this part of the world and is a symbol of the purity of this region.
Tributaries: Its power is given by crystal clear tributaries such as Unca, Krušnica, Klokot and its biggest sister, the river Sana.
Where to “capture” the magic of Una?
For photographers, Una is an inexhaustible inspiration because of its specific “Una green” color:
Martin Brod and Štrbački buk: These localities offer the most dramatic scenes of large travertine cascades and waterfalls crashing down with huge noise and water mist Visit Bihać.
Japodski otoci and Ripač: Here the Una flows more calmly, creating coves and backwaters that are perfect for drone shots or landscape photography at dusk.
Tufa: Una is famous for tufa – a living stone that creates cascades. Details of water pouring over moss-covered travertine barriers are a favorite subject for long exposures.
How to get there and what to experience?
Access: The best base for exploration is the city of Bihać, which is easily reached by highways from the direction of Sarajevo (via Jajce) or from Croatia (via Plitvice).
Activities: In addition to photography, Una offers the best rafting in the region, especially on the section from Štrbački buk to Bihać. For those looking for peace, a ride on a traditional Unska boat through Bosanska Krupa will provide an unforgettable experience.
Fauna: Paradise for anglers
The clarity of the water makes Una home to numerous noble species of fish. Here the young (Queen Una), brook trout and grayling live here, which is why the river is a world-famous destination for fly-fishing.
