VALLEY OF HEROES
AN EPIC MONUMENT TO HUMAN DISOBEDIENCE
In the heart of the Sutjeska National Park, the oldest and largest national park in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is the Valley of Heroes. This memorial complex on Tjentište is not only a reminder of one of the bloodiest battles of the Second World War, but also a masterpiece of Yugoslav brutalist architecture that has fascinated visitors from all over the world for decades.

Historical context: The epic on Sutjeska
The Battle of Sutjeska, also known as “Operation Schwarz”, took place in May and June 1943. Over 120,000 enemy soldiers (Germans, Italians and their allies) surrounded the much weaker partisan forces. In impossible conditions, with huge losses, the partisans managed to make a fateful breakthrough from the ring right across the Sutjeska canyon and the mountain massifs that surround it, the Sutjeska National Park. This event became a symbol of supreme courage and sacrifice.

ARCHITECTURAL MASTERPIECE – MIODRAG ŽIVKOVIĆ
The central part of the complex is a monumental monument erected in 1971, the work of sculptor Miodrag Živković.
Symbolism: The monument consists of two huge concrete blocks (19 meters high) that do not touch, but form a narrow passage. They symbolize the force of the breakthrough and the victory of life over death. Monument Database.
Memorial House: Beneath the monument is a museum (Memorial House) designed by Ranko Radović. The interior is decorated with fascinating frescoes by Krsto Hegedušić, which depict the suffering and struggle during the Visit Foča offensive through an expressionist style.

WHAT CAN PHOTOGRAPHERS EXPECT?
Tjentište is one of the most photographed locations in the Balkans due to its photogenic nature in all seasons:
Geometry and brutalism: The clean lines of white concrete against the green mountain peaks of Maglić and Volujak provide incredible compositions.
Drone photo: Only from the air can you see the complete harmony of the monument with the surrounding landscape and the long stairs that lead to the top of the hill.
Night sky: Due to the minimal light pollution in the national park, this is a perfect place for astrophotography (the Milky Way above the monument).
Morning haze: The valley is often covered in low fog in the morning, which gives the monument a mystical and timeless look.

WILDLIFE IN THE HINDQUARTERS OF THE MONUMENT
The complex is surrounded by 17,500 hectares of rugged nature:
Flora: In the immediate vicinity is Perućica, one of the last primeval forests in Europe, where beech and fir trees reach heights of over 50 meters.
Fauna: The national park is home to bears, wolves, chamois and golden eagles. Various species of rare mountain butterflies and endemic plants can often be seen in the clearings around the monument.
