THE PEEK CRVENI KUK
WHERE THE WINDS WRITES HISTORY AND SILENCE HEALS
There are places where the line between earth and sky seems thinner than others. One such place is Crveni Kuk, a stone sentinel that has stood guard over Visočica for centuries, a mountain that carries height in its name and the untamed wilderness of the Herzegovina karst and Bosnian pastures in its heart.
MORE THAN A HIKE – AN ENCOUNTER WITH YOUR SELF
The climb to Crveni Kuk is not a race against time or a test of endurance. It is a pilgrimage through silence. As you set off from the village of Sinanovići, where the smell of homemade bread mixes with the sharp mountain air, you leave behind the noise of civilization. Here your phone loses signal, but you finally establish a connection with the world around you.
Crveni Kuk (1,733 meters above sea level) is one of the most beautiful and accessible peaks of the Visočica mountain in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located on the natural border between Bosnia and Herzegovina, surrounded by the canyons of the Rakitnica, Ljuta and Neretva rivers.
WHY RED?
The name of the peak hides a secret in the rock itself. As the sun sets, its limestone rocks take on shades of copper and purple. At such moments, Crveni Kuk does not look like a piece of rock, but like a living being that pulsates in the rhythm of nature. From its peak, the view of the Rakitnica Canyon gives you the feeling of standing on the edge of the world. The 800-meter depth below reminds you of the power of water and time.
WHAT MAKES THIS PEEK SPECIAL?
A view that changes perspective: Seeing Treskavica, Bjelašnica and Prenj from one point means understanding the architecture of the Bosnian and Herzegovinan Alps.
Symphony of the Wind: On Crveni Kuk, the wind is never silent. It brings the scent of iodine from the Adriatic and the freshness from the peaks of Zelengora.
Encounters on the way: Don’t be surprised if a flock of sheep or a pair of golden eagles circling above the cliffs block your path. You are just a guest here, they are the hosts.
CRVENI KUK IS A PARADISE FOR PHOTOS
Dramatic Puzim: The top offers the best view of the nearby Puzim peak, which dominates the horizon with its pointed, alpine formation.
360° panorama: The view stretches from Treskavica in the east, over Prenje and Čvrsnica in the south, to Bjelašnica in the north.
Golden Hour: Due to the open space to the west, sunsets here are spectacular, casting a reddish glow on the rocks that give the peak its name.
How to get there?
The ascent to Crveni Kuk starts from the village of Sinanovići (Trnovo municipality), which can be reached via the paved road via Bjelašnica.
Path: From Sinanović, it moves along the valley towards the locality of Jelenjača. In the spring, a lake periodically forms here due to the melting of the snow, which is a sight worth visiting
VISOČICA IS KNOW FOR ITS RICH BIODIVERSITY
Flora: The slopes are covered with mountain meadows, which in late spring and summer are full of medicinal herbs and Dinaric endemics. You can find various types of linura, thyme and rare mountain lilies.
Fauna: It is not uncommon to see wild horses roaming freely in these vast spaces. Also, the sky above Crveni Kuk is often crossed by eagles and hawks.
TIPS FOR VISITORS
Equipment: Bring a windbreaker even in summer – the winds on Visočica are constant and sharp.
Water: There are no permanent sources of drinking water on the trail itself after leaving the village, so stock up in Sinanovići.
