ISTUP WATERFALL
A HERZEGOVINA PARADISE HIDDEN IN THE BREGAV CANYON

This is not just a tourist spot on the map; it is a turquoise haven where the sound of civilization is lost in the roar of water, and the scent of medicinal herbs mixes with the freshness of the mountain river.

The path to the hidden gem
You don’t get to Istup by chance; you get there with intention.
The adventure begins in Stolac: From the city, head upstream to the source of the Bregava. The path takes you through authentic Herzegovinian villages such as the settlement of Do.

It is not technically demanding, but requires sturdy footwear (trail shoes or hiking boots) because the Herzegovinian stone is not forgiving of flip-flops Visit Stolac.
Reward: The moment you feel the sudden drop in temperature and hear the noise, you will know you are close.

IMPORTANT WARNING!
The Bregava River Canyon and the path to the Istup Waterfall pass through typical Herzegovinian karst, which is a natural habitat for snakes, including venomous ones. Due to the specific terrain, sunny rocks and proximity to water, encounters with snakes are very possible during the warmer months (spring – autumn).

What species can you encounter?
The viper (Vipera ammodytes): The most dangerous European venomous snake. Recognizable by the characteristic “horn” on the tip of the nose and the zigzag pattern on its back. Often lives on rocky ground, but also on the branches of low bushes (be careful when moving through the macchia!).
Viper (Vipera berus): Rare in the lower areas, but present in the higher zones around the canyon.
Non-venomous snakes: You will often see white-eared (along the water) or cow-sucked snakes, which are harmless but should not be disturbed.

How to protect yourself?
Adequate footwear: Never go to the Istup in slippers or sandals.Deep hiking boots and long legs drastically reduce the risk of being bitten.
Watch where you step: Before you sit on a rock or grab a rock with your hand, check your surroundings. Avoid sticking your hands into impenetrable bushes or crevices in rocks.
Use Poles: Hiking poles create vibrations that snakes feel and usually retreat before you even see them.
Don’t panic: If you see a snake, walk away slowly. A snake never attacks first unless it feels threatened or you step on it.

What if there is a bite?
Stay calm: Panic makes the heart beat faster and poison spreads.
Immobilization: The bitten limb should be immobilized.
Ambulance: Immediately contact the Stolac Ambulance or call the Mountain Rescue Service (GSS). Do not try to suck out the poison or bind the wound without professional knowledge.
