HUTOVO BLATO
GREEN CROWN OF HERZEGOVINA

In the heart of karst Herzegovina, just ten kilometers from ÄŒapljina and within reach of Stolac, lies the Hutovo Blato Nature Park – one of the richest wetland ecosystems in Europe. With an area of over 7,400 hectares, this sub-Mediterranean reserve represents an incredible combination of six lakes, canals and the Krupa River, forming a water labyrinth that pulses with life throughout the year.

The phenomenon of the Krupa River and cryptodepression
Hutovo blato is a hydrological phenomenon. It consists of six connected lakes (Deransko, Jelim, Drijen, Orah, Å krka and artificial Svitavsko), which are fed by underground sources of the limestone massif Ostrvo.
Crypto depressions: Some of these lakes, like Jelim, are below sea level, which makes them a rare natural phenomenon – crypto depressions.
Upstream river: The Krupa River (9 km long) connects the lakes with the Neretva. It is unique in Europe because, due to its low head, the Neretva pushes the Krupa upstream at high water levels, forcing it to flow “backwards” towards the lakes of the Hutovo Blato Nature Park.

A PARADISE FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS AND BIRD WATCHERS
Hutovo Blato is globally recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA) and registered under the Ramsar Convention Ramsar Sites Information Service.
Ornithological richness: Between 200 and 240 species of birds reside here. During the winter months, the swamp becomes a refuge for tens of thousands of migratory birds that find peace and food here.
Photographic aspect: For nature photographers, the best periods are early spring and autumn (migration). A boat ride through canals covered with white and yellow water lilies provides unreal shots. The vast landscapes of reeds, sedges and willow forests at dusk create a palette of colors that is impossible to replicate in a studio.

UNIQUE BIODIVERSITY
Flora: The park hides over 600 plant species. From water lilies to forests of ash, oak and wild pomegranate, the vegetation changes depending on the humidity of the soil.
Fauna: 22 species of fish live under the surface of the water, including the endemic Neretva gaovica and the migratory eel, which is also a gastronomic symbol of this region.

WHAT TO DO IN HUTOVO BLATO
Photo safari: Riding traditional boats through the narrow canals is the heart of any visit.
Birdwatching: There are educational trails and observatories intended for professional and amateur bird watchers.
Active vacation: Biking and hiking on the trails around the lake offer a different perspective on the Park.
Gastronomy: In local restaurants, be sure to try the Neretva eel and frog brudet, a dish that defines the taste of this climate.
