The Bosnian Himalayas: Discovering Prenj
As you venture further south from Visočica, the horizon is dominated by Prenj Mountain—one of the most striking and rugged mountain ranges in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Located in the heart of the Dinaric Alps and often referred to as the “Bosnian Himalayas” due to its dramatic limestone peaks and alpine terrain, Prenj is a sanctuary for those seeking the ultimate wilderness.
  • The Peaks: With 11 peaks soaring above 2,000 meters, it offers a visual spectacle of jagged rocks and deep valleys.
  • The Experience: This is where the Mediterranean air meets the harsh mountain climate, creating a unique ecosystem that is both beautiful and unforgiving.
  • A Rider’s View: While the heart of Prenj is a hiker’s paradise, the surrounding roads provide riders with some of the most dramatic backdrops in the Balkans.

Main Access Points (By Car/Motorbike)

For those arriving on two or four wheels, the most popular starting points are:
Rujište (above Mostar): The easiest and most common access. Rujište (1050 m above sea level) is reached by an asphalt road from Mostar. Here you can park in front of a hunting lodge or hotel and continue on foot or on the macadam road towards Bijele Vode.
Boračko Lake and Crno Polje (from Konjic): From Konjic, you go via Borak towards Boračko Lake. From there, a macadam road leads to Crno Polje, which is a popular entry point for climbing peaks such as Osobac.Tisovica Valley (By SUV): From Konjic, via the village of Rapta, a macadam road (approx. 25 km) leads deep into the heart of the mountain, all the way to the Tisovica Valley, one of the most beautiful valleys in the Balkans.

2. Mountain Approaches (Hiking Trails)

If you want to conquer the highest peaks, such as Zelena Glava (2103 m), the most common routes are:
From Jablanica: The trail leads through the Šanica canyon towards the Cetina peak.
Mostarska Bijela: A spectacular but demanding trail that leads from the Bijela river canyon towards the interior of the massif.

Important notes for drivers

Off-road vehicles: The road to Tisovica and the deeper parts of the mountain requires a vehicle with high clearance (4×4) or an adventure motorcycle.

Navigation: Mountain roads are not always well marked for vehicles. It is recommended to use hiking maps or GPX tracks.
